Byzantine Collar

Byzantine weave is a modified European 4-in-1, or box chain, that is among the oldest chainmaille patterns in the world. The Romans brought this design back to Italy and incorporated it into their own armor designs. By the dark ages, chainmail had found its way to the Byzantine Empire, where instead of using it for armor, they turned the modest 4-in-1 weave into elaborate adornments fit for kings. Traditionally constructed with gold and embellished with gemstone beads, the Byzantine weave is the cornerstone of chainmaille jewelry and is still commonly found in jewelry stores in Italy today.
